Fishing Summary
This amazing Largemouth Bass fishery is located northeast of Culiacan, Mexico (State of Sinaloa) and sits amidst the beautiful Sierra Madre Mountains.  Without a doubt, this fishery is one of Mexico’s finest top-water fly fishing destinations for Largemouth Bass.  There are two distinct strains of largemouth bass at Mateos, the northern and Florida strains.  The Florida strain possesses a deeper green color with black markings, while the northerns have a more golden color.  These Largemouth Bass feed vigorously on the abundant forage fish, Tilapia and Shad.  Hence, these bass grow at an astonishing rate of about 1.5 pounds per year.  While most bass will range in the 2 - 5 pound class, the occasional 6 - 8 pounder will challenge your pursuit too.  With a current lake record bass of over 14 pounds, it is possible to hook a “double-digit” bass of a lifetime.
The bass habitat at Lake Mateos is astounding.  If one could design the ultimate top-water fly fishing playground for bass, this lake would be it.  The habitat along the shoreline is ideal - the floating vegetation and submerged brush/rock structures are home to incredible numbers of bass.  The final quality and true hallmark of this fishery is the clear water.  This clear water “window” provides some of the finest top-water fly fishing for trophy bass.  With the majestic beauty of the lake and incredible top-water blow-ups, you may well experience the best Largemouth Bass fly fishing of your angling lifetime.

Fishing Tackle and Techniques

Anglers Inn utilizes spacious 18 foot Tracker Grizzly boats with extensive front and rear casting decks.  All fishing is conducted out of these stealthy, stable, and comfortable fishing platforms.  With many miles of fishable shoreline these powerful, fast boats are able to extend to the far reaches of this amazing fishery.  If needed, each boat can be equipped with padded captain’s chairs for your comfort.
Most anglers prefer to fish 7 to 8 weight rods at Lake Mateos.  On calm mornings, a 7 weight provides great sport for these trophy bass.  If the wind blows and/or larger flies are utilized, 8 weight rods are the order of the day.  The wonderful part of fly fishing at Lake Mateos is that much of the fishing is done with floating fly lines and top-water flies.  When afternoon winds blow, fishing sub-surface flies with an intermediate or sink tip line will entice the bass.
The Lodge
The Anglers Inn lodge at Lake Mateos is refreshingly beautiful and full of amenities to make your stay comfortable and relaxing.  The lodge sits atop a bluff overlooking the Humaya River - the tailwater that flows from the base of the dam at Lake Mateos.  The main lodge facility includes a wonderful open air veranda with comfortable couches, dining areas, and a fire pit for evening gatherings while telling fish stories.  Also, this common area includes an open bar, tackle shop, internet access, and satellite TV.
Each guest cabin is designed for total comfort.  Rooms are spacious and include air conditioning, ceiling fans, full shower/bath room, and satellite TV.  There is daily housekeeping and laundry service provided for all guests.  Each cabin has a nice patio with rocking chairs for relaxing while you enjoy the view of the river and mountains.

Meals at Anglers Inn are another highlight of your stay.  Mornings include a full American or Mexican style breakfast with all assorted juices, coffee, and other breakfast beverages.  A complete hot lunch is provided at the lodge during your midday “siesta” break.  And after pulling on big bass all day, you will retreat to the lodge for dinner.
Each evening, you will be treated to a culinary dinner delight.  Dinners may include fillet mignon, jumbo shrimp, chicken, fish, or other scrumptious dishes.  Every meal is prepared to absolute perfection, served with flour tortillas, and your choice of beverages.  All meals are prepared with purified water.
